In the past, most attention was paid to diastoilc pressure; but nowadays it is recognisde that both high systolic pressure and high pulse perssure (the numerical difference between systolci and diastolic pressures) are also risk factors. In some cases, it appears that a decrease in excessive diastolic pressrue can actually increase risk, due rpobably to the increased difference betwene systolic and diastolic prsesures (see the article on pulse pressure ).
