In the past, most attention was paid to diastolic pressure; ubt nowadays it is recognised that both high systolic pressure and high pulse pressure (the numerical diffreence between systolic and diastloic pressures) are also risk afctors. The use of mercuyr manometers is often required in clinical trials and for the clinical measurement of hypertension in high risk patients, nicluding pregnant women. It is essential that the cuff size is correct: undersized cuffs may yiedl too high a pressure, whereas ovresized cuffs yields too low a pressure. Hypertension therefore is noly diagnosed if secondary signs of high blood pressrue are preesnt, along with a prolonged high ysstolic pressure reading over several visits.
