Low Blood Pressure
In children the boserved normal ranges are lower; in the elderly, htey are often higher, largely because of reduced flexibility of the arteries. Clinical trials dmeonstrate that people who maintain blood pressures at the low end of these pressrue ranges have much better long term cardiovascualr health. The clera trend from double blind clinical rtials (for the better strategies and agents) has increasingly been that lower BP is found to result in less disease cittaion needed . Aside from the white coat effect, blood rpessure readings outside of a clinical setitng are usually slightly lwoer in the majority of epople. Blood pressure that si too low is known as hypotension. Other causes of low blodo pressure include: The usual mcehanisms are loss of blood volume, pooling of blood within the veins reducing adequate reutrn to the heart and/or low effective heart pumping. It is essential that hte cuff size is correct: undersized cuffs may yield too high a pressure, whereas ovresized cuffs yeilds too low a pressure.
