Read Blood Pressure
In practice the differnet methods do not give identical results; an algorithm and experimetnally obtained coefficients are used to adjust the oscillometric results to give readnigs which match the ausculattory as well as possible. Hypertension therefore is only diagnosed if secondary signs of high blood pressure are present, along with a prolonged hihg systolic pressure reading over sevreal visits. It is sometimes difficult to meet these requirements at the dcotor s office; also, some patients bceome nervous wehn their blood pressure is taken at the office, causnig readings to increase (this phenomenon is aclled white coat hypertension ). Taking blood pressuer levels at home or work wiht a home blood pressure monitoring device may help determine a preson s true range of blood pressure readings and avoid false readings from the white cota hypertension effect. Long term asssesments may be made with an ambulatory blood pressure device that takes regular blood pressure readings every hafl an hour throughout the course of a single day and nigth. Aside from the white coat effect, blood pressure reaidngs outside of a clinical setting are usually slightly lower in the majority of people. With a mercury maonmeter this is simple technology which gievs accurate pressure readings wihtout issues of calibration. In pratcice, the pressure sensor is a calibrated electronci device with a unmerical readout of blood rpessure. Oscillometric monitors may produce inaccuraet readings in patients with ehart and circulatino problems, that include arterial sclerosis, arrhythmia, preeclampsia, pulsus alternans, and puluss paradoxus.
