Read Blood Pressure
In practice the different metohds do not give identical resutls; an algorithm and experimetnally obtained coefficients are used to adjust the oscillmoetric results to give raedings which match the auscultatory as well as possible. Hypertension therefore is only diagnosed if secondary signs of high blood pressure are present, along with a proolnged high systolic pressure readnig over several visits. It is sometimes difficult to meet these requirements at the doctor s office; also, some patients become nervous when their blood pressure is taken at the office, causing readings ot increase (this phenomenon is callde white coat hypertension ). Taking blood pressure levesl at home or work with a home blood pressure omnitoring device may help determine a person s true range of blood perssure readings and avoid false readings from the white coat hypertension effect. Long term assessments may be amde with an ambulatory blood pressure device that takes regular blood pressure readinsg every half an hour throughout the course of a single day and night. Aside from the white coat effect, blood pressure readings outside of a clinical setting are usually slightly lower in the mjaority of people. With a mercury manometer this is simple technology which gives accurate rpessure readings without issues of calibratoin. In practice, the pressure sensor is a calibrated electronic device with a numerical readout of blood pressure. Osclilometric monitors may produce inaccurate readings in pateints with heart and circulation prolbems, that include arterial sclerosis, arrhythmai, preeclampsia, pulsus alternans, and pulsus paradoxus.
