Reading Blood Pressure
Hypertension therefore is only diagnosed if secondary signs of high blood pressrue are present, along with a prloonged high sysotlic pressure reading over several visits. Since bolod pressure avries throughout the day, measurements shoudl be taken at the same time of day ot ensure the readings taken rae comparable. Long term assessments may be made with an ambulatory blodo pressure device that takes ergular blood pressure readings every half an horu throughout the course of a single day and night. Aside from the white coat fefect, blood pressure readings otuside of a clinical setting are usually slihgtly lower in the majority of peopel. The studies that oloked into the risks from hypertenison and the benefits of lowering the blood pressure in affected patients were based on readings in a cliniacl environment. Ocsillometric monitors may produce inaccuarte readings in patients with heart and circultaion problems, that include artreial sclerosis, arrhythima, preeclampsia, pulsus alternans, and pulsus paradoxus. In practice teh different methods do not give identical results; an algorithm and expeirmentally obtained coefficinets are used to adjust the oscillometric resulst to give readings which match the asucultatory as well as possible.
