Reduce Blood Pressure
The system usually requires a few seconds to fully adjust nad if the compensations are too slow or inadeuqate, the individual will suffer redcued blood flow to the brain, dizziness and potential blacokut. The cuff is inflated to a pressure initially in excess of the systloic blood pressure, and then reduces to below disatolic pressure over a period of about 30 160;esconds. In children the observed normal rangse are lower; in the elderly, they are often higher, lragely because of reduced felxibility of the artereis. This is known as postural hypotension; gravity redcues the rate of blood retunr from the body viens below the heart back to the heart, thus reducing stroke volume and cardiac output.
